Interview with Darren : Owner of Rock for Her : check out his site!!!

1. How long has Rock for Her been around? … tell us how you got into making jewelry that plays a BIG ROLE in a wedding.
Well I fell into diamond accented Jewelry sales in 2007. I imported jewelry from a large manufactory in India and sold to large retail chains such as Macy’s and Sam’s Club. Because my name was now associated with jewelry I started getting asked for things like engagement rings for some of my friends who where getting married. Before I knew it gold cost sky rocketed from $400 per oz to $900 per oz which demolished our margins and I was out of a job. But that ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me!

January of 2008 is when Rock For Her emerged. I knew I could offer a great product while staying away from the large margins retailers charged their customers. I love working with the Groom before he is about to make the biggest decision and write the biggest check of his young life. I love offering him a alternative from going into an competitive intimidating environment where you really cant trust anyone. I love guiding him in creating a unique piece just for the girl he is madly in love with.

2. What are the up and coming engagement and wedding band trends?
I believe Halo has been a huge trend for the last couple of years. I have been creating more and more double Halo rings. We also have been creating a lot more rings with hand engraving on the band. I think the next trend is going to be a mix of new and old. People want the antique look but want to through there own modern twist on it.

3. Is gold making a comeback?
Yellow gold is for sure making a comeback. It din’t leave completely but I think it reminds people of older more vintage style which is totally in.

4. What is the best advice you have for a groom when it comes to picking the perfect ring for his future wife?
Listen to her. She most likely has been hinting if you are in a serious relationship. This is not about you. This is about her and it is forever.
I also am a big advocate of spending what you are comfortable with.

5. When you say you can make a “customizable” ring for any couple, what does this mean?
Well we start with getting to know the customer and his needs. That usually includes ring style, Metal type, Stone shape and size range and budget.
-After I am clear on his needs I will get a quote of how much it will cost to create from scratch right here is Southern California her one of a kind ring.
-We will then take the cost of the custom ring and subtract that from his total budget and I will find some stone option within that range to bring in to show loose.
-After he has chosen a stone we start drawing her ring for his approval.
-When he approves the digital image it will go into production and a wax is made that is then casted in the metal choice.
-All the stones are set including the center stone and it is polished and ready for delivery 10 days after he approves it to go into production.

We specialize in engagement Rings but because we are creating from scratch we can customize any piece of jewelry you can think of.

6. Can you make matching wedding bands?
Yes we can, and we do. A lot of my customers make unique engagement ring that absolutely need matching wedding bands.

7. What is your most popular stone size? Is bigger better, or clarity? or is this a personal preference?
It is always about the look of the stone. Size matters to most guys but it ends up being about their personal preference and their budget. Diamonds are not cheep. There are so many little factors that goes into the value of a stone. Different things matter more to different people. The average stone size I sell is about 1.25ctw.

8. What is the timeline and process of making a custom ring?
I would say the timeline is 4-6 weeks. If the right stone is found right away and he is certain about the ring style it can be a 2 week process.
With that being said, I love what I do, and I hope to make some amazing rings in 2012 and 2013!!!
